Meriva® – The World’s Most Proven Bioavailable Curcumin
Proving greater bioavailability for a curcumin material is good. Proving what a curcumin material will actually do for a patient’s health is even more important. With 24 positive, human clinical trials (as of October 2016), Meriva® stands apart from competitive curcumins as the most science-backed. This continued research has made Meriva® the curcumin of choice for such respected parties as the Cleveland Clinic (the #1 cardiovascular hospital in the USA), Thorne Research Labs (leading American naturo-pathic product line) and Dr. Parris Kidd, renowned researcher of natural remedies. Two of the major studies conducted on Meriva® curcumin involved osteoarthritic pain. Osteoarthritis is the painful condition where joints rub against each other due to cartilage damage. The first study involved 50 osteoarthritic patients over a three-month period. At the end of the three-month period, those using 1,000 mg per day of Meriva® experienced the following improvements:

• pain measurement scores (pain, stiffness) during treadmill walks were decreased by 58% vs. a control group
• walking distance on treadmill tests increased over 4 times
• reduced blood levels of CRP (C-reactive protein), a key measurement of inflammation, by 16 times
• no adverse side-effects
• improved emotional well-being,resulting from increased mobility
• decreased need for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and painkillers• reduced costs of treatment (less anti-inflammatory drugs, treatment and hospitalization)

A second eight-month study on joint pain with Meriva® curcumin was then conducted to validate the three-month study over a longer time-period. The positive findings of the three-month study were further confirmed by the eight-month study which evaluated another 100 osteoarthritic patients.12
After the second joint pain study was completed, the curiosity of the researchers was piqued. Although these were longer-term studies, doctors carrying out the study noted that many patients were experiencing pain relief in mere days, sometimes within hours. As it takes time for inflammation to be reduced sufficiently to provide pain relief, researchers felt that there must be other mechanisms at work with Meriva® than just anti-inflammation.

Indeed, in the follow-up to the joint pain studies, it was confirmed that Meriva® is not just an anti-inflammatory, but also an analgesic. This means that Meriva® acts to block pain pathways.
A study was initiated to determine how powerful this analgesic effect could be. It was determined that 2,000 mg of Meriva® per day, had the equivalent pain-blocking effect as two extra strength acetaminophen doses. The effect of the Meriva® was as fast and lasted as long as the acetaminophen. A number of pain types were evaluated including migraines and dental pain.13
It appears that Meriva® was blocking the same pain receptors as the acetaminophen. The major difference between the Meriva® and acetaminophen is in adverse side effects. Meriva® has no major side effects; whereas, acetaminophen has a wide range of potential issues including nausea, tiredness, stomach pain in the short-term, and possible liver damage and reduction of empathy with long-term use.

What is Boswellia Extract?
Boswellia serrata extract (BSE) is the gum resin extrusion from the Boswellia serrata tree. It is also known as Indian Frankincense. Frankincense was one of the gifts brought to the birth of Jesus by the Magi because of its high value. Boswellia is a traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine that has been used for thousandsof years for arthritis, lung diseases, liver disorders, diarrhea, nervousness and as a diuretic.

Despite the rich history of traditional benefits attributed to Boswellia use, the evidence in preclinical settings has been promising but limited due to absorption issues.4,5 The Boswellic acids with anti-inflammatory potential found in Boswellia extract are very poorly absorbed by humans as they are not water-soluble. Another challenge is that traditional uses of Boswellia extract require high doses of the material – between 3 to 5 grams per day – making for inconvenient dosing and poor compliance by modern consumers.

Casperome® Amore effective Boswellia

A new delivery form of Boswellia extract known as Casperome® has addressed the absorption issues associated with typical Boswellia extracts. Using patented Phytosome® technology, which complexes Boswellia extract with sunflower lecithin, Casperome® Boswellia has demonstrated significantly improved absorption. Casperome® is the chosen source of Boswellia used in the Certified Naturals™ Bioavailable Boswellia formulation.
Superior Absorption
The lecithin utilized in the Phytosome® technology protects Boswellic acids from degradation by water and shuttles the acids through the intestinal tract more efficiently. This mimics how taking Boswellic acids with a fatty meal would improve absorption. By using the Phytosome® delivery method, Boswellic acids test 300-400 percent higher in blood measurements when patients take Casperome® vs standard Boswellia extracts.6
Not only is Casperome® better absorbed, but it is absorbed faster to deliver quicker pain relief. Casperome® also remains in the system longer which makes it ideal for once per day dosing which is more convenient for consumers.6
Natural full bouquet of Boswellic acids
Another major difference between Casperome® and other medicinal Boswellia formulations is that Casperome® offers the whole bouquet of Boswellic acids naturally found in Boswellia extract. There are 11 major Boswellic acids, but most commercial Boswellia extracts focus on a single acid, usually AKBA, which is thought to inhibit 5-lox enzyme. However, recent studies have downplayed the role of AKBA in the clinical effectiveness of Boswellia extract and highlighted other acids such as β-BA.5 Overall, it is clear that the Boswellic acids in extract are best when working in conjunction with each other as nature intended and as Casperome® provides. While the mechanisms are still being investigated, it appears that Boswellic acids target the blocking of multiple enzymes, proteins and fatty acids that cause inflammation such as prostaglandin E2 and cathepsin G.

How does Boswellia compare to Curcumin?
Boswellia on the rise: Curcumin from turmeric root has become one of the most popular natural ingredients for pain relief on the Canadian market. While the market for Boswellia is smaller, it is growing at a faster rate than curcumin. The Boswellia
market is expected to almost triple in size by 2025. Both Boswellia and curcumin have benefits to help reduce pain and inflammation and both have natural analgesic effects for pain.
